Further clarification: The Islamic calendar is a pure lunar calendar, with 12 lunar months of approximately 28 days, for a year total of 354 or 355. In relation to the Gregorian calendar widely used in the Western world, a given date in the Islamic calendar (such as the start of Ramadan) drifts between 11 and 12 days per year.

absolutely, John - but for the generation of undergraduate students currently at university, it's been true that it coincided with orientation, and has been 'front and centre' as they adjust to life on campus... but I should have clarified that - thx!

Just a clarification. The month of Ramadan follows the Islamic year which is shorter than the secular year. Thus, relative to school orientation it moves. It may be overlapping now, but it will soon be in early August, then July, then during year end exams and so forth.
