Your first point is, I think, quite apt. Although I grew up with the priest facing us, I've more recently moved to a parish that happens to have the priest facing eastward. I expected to find this something of an annoyance, but to my surprise, I find that it helps me focus on the object of our worship rather than the person in front of us. It doesn't even seem particularly impersonal; as you say, the priest is suddenly more of an extension of the congregation. I think that we definitely need to reconsider the way we do this.
