Yes, I agree. Our Eucharistic theology is such that someone with a food allergy may receive in the species of wine, the full eucharistic presence of Christ — the likeliness that someone can't receive in both is very low.

Anglicans are free to receive the Blessed Sacrament in one species alone as either suffices for a full and complete act of Communion. To replace the Eucharistic matter of bread with rice, however, flies in the face of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, which Anglicans accept as normative, and which stipulates that the Sacraments be "ministered with unfailing use of Christ's words of institution and of the elements ordained by Him." There is no way of knowing whether a rice-wafer can be consecrated.

Since I have what one of priests in your story said "food issues" as well, I can relate.... allergy to yeast is probably my most difficult. What I've found the most frustrating is when, again you noted in your experience, others make statements directly or indirectly with respect to special treatment because you need something different, not want something different.... God bless you and thank you!

Ali, thank you for writing this. I really appreciate your candidness and ability to move your readers through a series of emotions...enabling us to connect with what you are writing about. Really well written and profound. I love the way you speak about your experience and, all the while, moving us toward 'zooming out' to see and respond to a bigger picture that you have unearthed for us.....

Beautifully written, Ali. Both funny and moving! I found myself close to tears at the end--it's a wonderful reminder of the kind of grace that is offered to broken people in communion.

Ali, thank you for your article - I so love how you express yourself. Thank you too, for increasing my awareness of those who have Celiac disease. You do handle yourself with grace, to your credit.

Hi,
Your experience is important to share. At the church I serve as vicar we encourage all to wear nametags. At the table in the greeting area (narthex for old church types) we have a sign with the name tags to please put in the upper right hand corner of the name tag a W with a slash through it, or an O with a slash through it. That way, the eucharistic server can see the need and get the non wheat wafer from the special box (pyx). And of course we use the hand that has NOT touched the wheat wafers. M. Mcmurren+, Prince fo peace Salem OR
